چکیده

THE new z/OS 1.2 TCP/IP stack introduces a greatly enhanced Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Management Information Base (MIB) to allow the systems programmer to perform diagnostics for the TCP/IP stack and sessions. The SNMP MIB includes hundreds of variables to analyze the core Internet protocols: Internet Protocol (IP), Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP), and Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), plus many other variables not available by any other means. Invaluable sources of data for monitoring z/OS performance and for troubleshooting include backlog for listener sessions or IP packets dropped for Communication Storage Manager (CSM) memory shortages. This article provides an introduction to SNMP, an overview of the z/OS MIB, discusses some interesting MIB tables, and concludes with several case studies where specific MIB variables can be used effectively for troubleshooting.

SNMP-DPI: Simple Network Management Protocol Distributed Program Interface

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) [1] Distributed Program Interface (DPI) is an extension to SNMP agents that permits end-users to dynamically add, delete or replace management variables in the local Management Information Base without requiring recompilation of the SNMP agent. This is achieved by writing a so-called sub-agent that communicates with the agent via the SNMP-DPI. For t...

CMIP based Light MIB: Design & Implementation

Various protocols have been proposed and developed to manage communication networks efficiently, which are becoming increasingly complex. Of those protocols, SNMP has been popular because it is easy to implement and widely available. However, it has problems in terms of scalability and security. CMIP is a good alternative to SNMP, and OSI MIB provides diverse features to model complex communica...

Management of Active Networks

Network elements are instrumented to support (a) monitoring of element performance, (b) configuring element operational parameters, and (c) reporting exceptional operational events. Configuration and performance monitoring instrumentation is organized in a standardized naming directory called Management Information Base (MIB) [4]. The MIB provides a universal directory of names for configuratio...

Traffic flooding attack detection with SNMP MIB using SVM

Recently, as network flooding attacks such as DoS/DDoS and Internet Worm have posed devastating threats to network services, rapid detection and proper response mechanisms are the major concern for secure and reliable network services. However, most of the current Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) focus on detail analysis of packet data, which results in late detection and a high system burden...

Formal Specification of SNMP MIB's Using Action Semantics: The Routing Proxy Case Study

The usual way to describe the semantics of MIB objects is just to give an informal English text explaining each object’s behavior. Informal descriptions are vague and incomplete. They are open to misinterpretation and may lead to inconsistent implementations. In this work we propose the use of Action Semantics as a simple and powerful tool for the formal description of the behavior of MIB objec...
